In celebration of Ikebana: The Japanese Art of Flower Arranging

Celebrate the beauty of spring with an investigation into the ancient and modern art of Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging. Through a historical examination of this Way of Floral Art, a practice in evolution over the last thousand years, students will gain an appreciation of the aesthetic of minimalism and the importance of symbolic elements within Japanese floral design. This course also includes live demonstrations of the various forms of Ikebana in each class.

Professor Rebecca Cragg, founder of Camellia Teas of Ottawa, attained a high level of mastery in Ikebana of the Saga Goryu Way of Flower Arranging, an ancient School of Ikebana dating to the nineth Century during the seven years she lived and taught in Japan. She has been a Research Fellow at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan since 2005. Her B.A. in Anthropology-Cultural Studies and M.A. in Museology-Art History are from Trent University. She has a degree in Education from McGill University and currently sits on the Board of Ikebana International Chapter #120 in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
